A stalemate at BMO for the Champions Cup opener

LAFC returned to BMO Stadium for a big international night against Cruz Azul, with the atmosphere feeling more like a playoff match than a regular fixture. From the opening minutes, LAFC tried to play on the front foot, using quick passing and wide attacks to stretch the Mexican side’s defense.

The breakthrough came in the first half when Denis Bouanga finished a sharp attacking move inside the box, giving LAFC a 1–0 lead and energizing the home crowd. Cruz Azul didn’t panic, though, and slowly grew into the match, especially by controlling longer spells of possession in midfield.

After halftime, the game tightened. Cruz Azul finally found their moment when Uriel Antuna capitalized on a defensive lapse and finished a counterattack to make it 1–1. That goal shifted the momentum and made the match feel like it could go either way.

LAFC pushed hard late, with chances coming from Bouanga and late runs into the box, but Cruz Azul’s defense held firm. The match stayed level through the final whistle, ending 1–1 and leaving everything to be decided in the second leg in Mexico.
