Fault Lines: San Jose Shake BMO to the Ground

It was even. It was tight. And then, in the blink of an eye, it wasn't.
A competitive, back-and-forth first half gave way to a second-half collapse as the San Jose Earthquakes tore through LAFC 4–1 at BMO Stadium on Saturday evening, handing the Black & Gold their most brutal home defeat of the 2026 MLS season.
Three goals in five second-half minutes. LAFC didn't just lose — the wheels came off.
The first half told a very different story. Both sides traded chances in an evenly matched opening 45. Hugo Lloris was tested early, making a sharp stop from Ousseni Bouda in just the second minute, with the San Jose attacker firing from the six-yard box off a Niko Tsakiris feed. LAFC responded and pushed back, but the Earthquakes' goalkeeper Daniel was equally up to the task, denying Son Heung-Min twice and keeping the sheet clean heading into the break. At halftime, it was 0–0 and anyone's game.
The second half opened with LAFC on the front foot. Son fired a shot to the top right corner in the 48th minute. BMO was alive, LAFC were pushing — and then it all went wrong.
In the 53rd minute, Timo Werner played Ousseni Bouda in on a fast break, and the San Jose forward fired from a difficult angle into the top right corner. A stunning strike. Three minutes later, Werner got on the scoresheet himself, finishing from the centre of the box off a Beau Leroux assist to make it 0–2. LAFC had no answers. Ryan Porteous picked up a yellow card in between, and then came the gut punch — the Scotsman deflected a Jamarr Ricketts cross into his own net in the 58th minute to put San Jose three unanswered goals to the good in the span of five chaotic minutes.
Three substitutions followed immediately — Ebobisse, Hollingshead, and Shaffelburg all came on — but the damage was done. A Reid Roberts own goal in the 74th minute gave LAFC a consolation of sorts, cutting it to 1–3, and briefly offered a flicker of hope. But Bouda wasn't done. The San Jose forward completed his brace in the 80th minute, finishing from the right side of the box to put the result beyond any doubt and cap a devastating four-goal Earthquakes night.
LAFC battled to the end — Ebobisse, Raposo, and Shaffelburg all went close late — but there was no coming back. The final whistle confirmed the damage. 4–1. San Jose's unbeaten start to the 2026 season rolls on.
For LAFC, the questions will come fast. A side that was pushing for all three points found themselves on the wrong end of a five-minute meltdown that defined the entire match. The response will need to be just as quick.
Next up, LAFC look to bounce back when they face the Colorado Rapids at home on Wednesday, April 22, 2026.
