Mexico stun Australia in prep for the World Cup

Mexico and Australia met at the iconic Rose Bowl in a final warm-up before the World Cup, with a huge crowd turning out for the international showcase. From the start, Mexico looked sharper and more comfortable, moving the ball well and pinning Australia back into their own half.

The breakthrough came in the first half from a set piece. Mexico delivered a dangerous corner into the box, and defender Johan Vásquez rose above everyone to head home the only goal of the match. It gave Mexico a 1–0 lead and matched the tone of the game—tight margins, physical battles, and few clear openings.

Australia tried to respond but struggled to create consistent chances in the first half. Mexico controlled most of the rhythm, though they couldn’t extend the lead despite a few half-chances.

After the break, Australia came out much more aggressive. They pressed higher, played with more urgency, and started to put Mexico under real pressure. They created a couple of dangerous moments, including one major chance they failed to convert that could have changed the game entirely.

Mexico, however, stayed organized defensively. Even when Australia pushed late, they couldn’t find a clean breakthrough, and Mexico managed the closing stages to protect the lead.

When the final whistle blew, Mexico had a narrow 1–0 win, built on a set-piece goal and disciplined defending, while Australia were left frustrated after improving significantly in the second half but not finishing their chances.
